Enneagram Type 7 – The Dreamer/Epicure

Types 7 tend to believe that the world is full of opportunities and so they spend all their time and energy searching for ways to make life easier. They are highly intuitive people with high energy levels and they find it difficult to relax as they are so absorbed fitting together the pieces of life’s puzzle.

Their underlying motivation is a fear of discomfort or pain and they go to great lengths to avoid experiencing these feelings. They are compulsive optimists. There is a solution to every problem – you just have to find it.

From a positive perspective, Types 7 are often visionaries and idealists who may have the means to solve our global problems. They believe that everyone is good at heart even if it takes a machine to dig deep enough to find it. By trusting in their fellow man, they tend to bring out the best in people. They make ideal entrepreneurs as they don’t believe in failure and will change tack at a moment’s notice if that is required.

But Dreamers often find it difficult to see a project through to the end because they are so focused on having fun and gritting your teeth and grinding out a result is often not much fun. The more successful ones generally employ another personality type to undertake such tasks as they acknowledge their weakness. Dreamers crave pleasure which they get by pursuing new challenges. This personality type has been linked to the „deadly“ sin of gluttony as they will feed their addiction to pleasure above and beyond almost everything else.

So do you fit the Dreamer role?

  • Do you immediately start looking for solutions when you are presented with a problem even if it belongs to someone else?
  • Can you talk to anyone? Do people seek you out at dinner parties and other social occasions? Were you the most popular kid in school?
  • Do people often comment on how „gifted“ you are?

Tips for dealing with the negative side of the dreamer type:

  • Make it a specific goal to follow through one task from beginning to the end.
  • Recognize that having multiple projects on the go at one time can be a way of trying to escape from reality.
  • Stop thinking that anyone who disagrees with you is criticizing you. Constructive criticism is often useful.

If you find yourself acting eccentrically or living in fantasy, embrace your real life and find reasons to be optimistic and radiate good cheer in life.

Essential Points To Consider When Selecting A Computer Repair Company

Computers are perhaps one of the most useful gadgets that have ever been invented. They have become even more powerful with the advent of web technology. There’s hardly anybody these days who doesn’t find computers necessary, whether it’s for work, business, or other purposes. However, despite how advanced this device is, it’s still prone to encountering defects. In other words, it’s far from being perfect. Sooner or later, problems will arise, either with the unit itself or with the programs installed. Hence, there will be a need for repair work. If you don’t address the problem as soon as possible, it will be more troublesome later on.

When it comes to problems with your computer, it’s best to rely on an expert for help. There are many cases of units getting damaged beyond repair because inexperienced people fiddle with them. As a result, even just a simple repair job gets blown out of proportion. The entire system even needs to be reprogrammed sometimes. This will cost a lot and it’s probably better to just think of buying a new unit instead. Hence, if something goes wrong with your computer, do the right thing immediately. Look for a competent computer repair company to handle the job.

The question now is how to choose the right computer repair company. Remember that there are so many of them nowadays, so you have to choose wisely. Here are a few key points to look into when you’re out hunting for one. Number one, look for repair companies that are more established and check them out first. Those who have been in the business longer are presumed to have more experience. However, this is just a presumption, which means that it’s up to you to verify the nature of services actually delivered by them. With the help of online resources, you can search for customer feedback and other reviews.

Number two, make sure that the company is licensed to do business, specifically in the computer repair business. Also check out the credentials and other qualifications of their technicians. Be wary of those companies that do not openly display their business permits and licenses. If it is indeed an established one, it will have no qualms about displaying its legitimacy. Number three, assess the kind of customer service the company delivers. You can do this by setting a personal appointment with them or calling them up. Last but not the least, also make sure that they provide for the necessary warranties.

Criminal Records – Investigating the Process of Running a Criminal Check

How often do you flip the news on, hoping to catch the weather report, only to hear about another story on „real life crime?“ It seems that everywhere we look nowadays, from the television to the newspaper to the radio; we are subjected to these tales of horror. Except, unlike an engrossing book we can’t put down, these stories are happening all around us. From world headlines on down to our very own community, we are being victimized by criminals in every way imaginable.

We’ve all been made very aware that we’re living in dangerous times. To suspect the worst out of people until we know better is the norm in our world. Unfortunately, even the most cautious of sorts can be led to being swindled by a scam artist, trusting an unfit nanny to take care of their kids, or even to hiring a dishonest employee. One of the measures that are used to help protect against these types of crimes is a seemingly simple background search focusing on the criminal history of an individual.

There are many reasons why someone would want to run a criminal history on another person; however, they all center around one universal theme – safety. Protecting ourselves, our families, our businesses, and our finances, are our utmost concerns. Whether your company has regularly performed a criminal records search or is just starting this process – whether you’ve personally ever performed such a search before or not; there is specific information you need to know.

So, what is a criminal record and what, exactly, does it contain? In general, a criminal record contains identifying information, history of arrest, history of conviction, incarceration information, and any other possible criminal facts about the individual in question. Anything from minor misdemeanors on up could be found; however, there are a few things to clarify in the explanation of crime records. The breakdown is as follows:

Arrest Records include various law enforcement records of arrests. Even this has a wide meaning – some will only report arrests that led to convictions while others will report any and all arrests.

Criminal Court Records include criminal records from local, state, and federal courts.

Corrections Records include prison records that detail periods of incarceration.

State Criminal Repository Records include statewide records that are a compilation of arrest records, criminal court records, and correction records.

The largest misconception, and many people hold on to this belief, is that the United States has one national database that is a compilation of all criminal records everywhere – from the local level up to the federal level. This, simply, is not true.

The closest thing the U.S. has to a nationwide criminal database is the Interstate Identification Index, or the „Triple-I.“

This compilation is managed through the National Crime Information Center (NCIC), by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (the FBI). The Triple-I will include criminal events such as: open arrest warrants, arrests, stolen property, missing persons, and dispositions regarding felonies and serious misdemeanors (which are defined as any crime that could result in one year or more of jail time). There are two things to understand about this database, however.

Only law enforcement personnel and agencies can access the Triple-I database. There is no nationwide criminal database available for the normal layperson.

If a county, city, or state does not report a crime to be entered into this database, it will not be found there. This means that many crimes that did not result in an incarceration in a federal prison will not be found in the Triple-I.

Law enforcement uses the Triple-I for a variety of reasons – from collecting a list of suspects for an unsolved crime to the prosecution of a charged individual. That’s great for them, but where does this leave the average American who needs to conduct a criminal history search? There are a few options – none of them are perfect on their own, but combined can, and will, give a fairly accurate picture of the person you’re investigating – if done properly. So how, or rather where, do you start?

Compile identifying information on the person you’re investigating. You’ll need, at a minimum, their full name, any prior surnames they may have had, and their date of birth. Be 100% positive you have their name spelled correctly. If you only have their name, you’ll have to do a little investigative work to get at least their birth date. Otherwise, you could end up with inaccurate criminal records that may not actually belong to the individual in question.

Ideas for locating additional information:

Talk to neighbors, coworkers, family members, or even past employers of the person in question.

Search online telephone directories as they often have the middle name, or at least the middle initial, noted with the address and phone data.

Utilize other online sources to try to gather identifying information such as their birth date and other names possibly used.

If possible, simply ask the person in question!

Obtain residential information on the person you’re investigating. You’ll need to know where they lived for the prior seven years. The cities and states at the very least, but again, the more complete data you have, the better.

Ideas for locating past addresses:

o Search one of the many free online services, often they’ll pop up every instance of the name that shows up in their database. This means if the person in question has moved around, each address associated with their name is likely to be in the database.

o If you do know the prior cities and states of their residences; you can search through past telephone directories, criss-cross directories (also called city directories and household directories) at the appropriate local libraries – and in some cases – online, for complete addresses of when the individual lived in that area.

o And again, if possible, you can always ask the individual you’re investigating.

Utilize free online sources to locate criminal records. Once you know the identifying information and the jurisdiction of the person you’re investigating, you can find the appropriate county, city, and state sites to access their public records. Realize that each state determines what is considered a „public“ record, so you’ll have to brush up on the laws for the locales you’re investigating.

Also, it’s important to realize that a mere 25% to 35% of criminal data is available online, and this includes public data. So, while it’s a great place to start, it cannot be the basis of a complete investigation into your person’s criminal history. Realize, too, that many of the records will be missing key identifying information – such as date of birth, middle names, and/or social security numbers.

Pay for a criminal check to be done by an online investigation company. Most, if not all, online investigative organizations utilize the National Criminal File (NCF) as the database they search. This file is also the database most commonly researched for pre-employment background checks.

As you know by now, this file isn’t actually national; however, most states in the U.S. are included. Realize, however, that nearly all of the information that makes up the NCF comes from correction records only. Therefore, there are lots of possible holes for missing criminal activity – from county criminal records to state repositories. Anything considered a misdemeanor (an offense less serious than a felony) also will likely not be included. This means you could receive a clean report on an individual who, does indeed, have a criminal history.

Another drawback to the National Criminal File is the consistent lack of identifying information, just as with the online public records mentioned above. It is rare to find social security numbers or dates of birth to verify you definitely have the correct criminal history for your individual. The more common the name, the more unlikely it is that you’ll receive data that won’t have to be confirmed.

There are very few names in our country unique enough for this to not be an issue. Remember this, as you will have to dig deeper once you’ve received the report the NCF generated or the data you personally retrieved in your search of public criminal records.

Deeper how? Go to the source of the report. Meaning, you’ll have to consult the original data source the compilation came from. You can request a manual search from a fee-based investigation company, or you can do it yourself. However, it is the only sure way of verifying the information you have is correct. This means you’ll have to search civil records in the correct jurisdictions, and while you can do some of this online – as mentioned above; you may have to request the records in writing or go to the actual county that stores the data.

This is where you’ll be able to use the identifying information you collected. You can compare the date of birth, the social security number, full name, and the complete addresses of the person at this point. By doing this, you can rule out the inherent error probability with a common name.

One last thing to mention. If you uncover information that leads you to not hire the individual in question, you will have to abide by the FCRA (Fair Credit Reporting Act). The FCRA mandates that when you pass someone over due to a criminal history report, it is their right by law to view the report you based your decision on. Make sure you follow this law or it could come back to haunt you in the form of a lawsuit.

Criminal history checks are an important facet in determining if an individual has a history in criminal activities. As with anything, gaining an accurate criminal report is largely dependent on what you put into it. With tenacity in acquiring complete identifying information, performing a fair and legal search, confirming whatever criminal data you do find; you will have an informative and accurate report at the end.

After all, the bottom line is determining that those you are seeking to protect – yourself, your family, your business, are safe from the criminal element.

The Houyhnhnms As a Moral Ideal For Humans

Some of the most profound questions that arise after reading the fourth book of Gulliver’s Travels are: What message is Swift trying to convey with the Houyhnhnms? Are they satiric figures or do they represent an ideal to which humans should aspire? Or is it something else entirely? James Clifford gives an account of a struggle between two approaches to the fourth book in the essay, „Gulliver’s Fourth Voyage: ‚Hard‘ and ‚Soft‘ Schools of Interpretation“. ‚Hard‘ critics assert that the Houyhnhnms do represent some sort of ideal. ‚Soft‘ critics contend that their meaning represents a false ideal which Swift presents through satire. The purpose of this essay will be to support the ‚Soft‘ interpretation by making an analysis of both schools of thought. Ultimately, it will be concluded that the Houyhnhnms do not represent and ideal standard of morality to which humans should aspire. Let us begin by presenting some of the arguments for the ‚Hard‘ view and then we will determine whether they can withstand the scrutiny of an opposing view.

In a 1794 essay, Thomas Sheridan is one of the first to sing the praises of the Houyhnhnms as the moral ideal. Sheridan asserts that they are intended to inspire humanity to cultivate reason and suppress the bestial nature depicted by the Yahoos. On this point, we find no fault with Sheridan’s view. However, he goes on to say, „Here [in the Houyhnhnms] you may see collected all the virtues…which dignify man’s nature, and constitute the happiness of his life“. Sheridan’s view is that this is a warning to mankind not to allow the animal part of his nature to be predominant but, rather, to emulate the rational Houyhnhnm which will lead man to a life of virtue and happiness.

The problem with Sheridan’s conclusion is the same kind of problem that we encounter with Plato’s view of happiness and justice in the Ideal City as set forth in the Republic. Plato believes that finding the nature of happiness and justice is an intellectual task similar to the solutions of mathematical problems. This point is illustrated in the following excerpt of a dialogue between Socrates and Glaucon in Book IX of the Republic: Socrates: If someone wants to say how far a king’s pleasure is from a tyrant’s, he’ll find, if he completes the calculation, that a king lives seven hundred and twenty-nine times more pleasantly than a tyrant. Glaucon: That’s an amazing calculation between pleasure and pain of the two men.

Like Plato, Sheridan sets forth that a totally rational life leads to virtue and happiness. However, moral dilemmas are not the same as mathematical equations. That total rationality leads to a moral ideal cannot be accepted without considerable qualification. Moral knowledge is not analogous to mathematical knowledge or to rigid rationalism. Sheridan, like Plato, makes the mistake of assuming that it is.

The first scholarly refutation of Sheridan’s view is provided by Henry Craik in an 1894 essay. Craik is the first to note that the Houyhnhnms and Yahoos may be intended as satiric figures rather than Swift’s ideal for humanity. Craik poses the questions: „Did he [Swift] satisfy himself with the ideal Houyhnhnm? Was the formal Stoicism, typified in the ruling class, Swift’s conception of the highest morality? Was that absence of passion and emotion what Swift most admired?“. Craik goes on to speculate that if this was not so, then it may have been a satire on humanity, whose best ideals could be attained only by eliminating all that makes life worth living.

The remainder of the essay will, among other things, endeavor to show that Craik is on the right track with his polite allusions, but we will first look at another view from the ‚Hard‘ school of interpretation.

A more recent (and more radical) mark of support for the ‚Hard‘ school is found in a 1965 essay by Conrad Suits titled, „The Role of the Horses in ‚A Voyage to the Houyhnhnms'“. In it, Suits defends the following remark: „…the first three quarters of Gulliver’s Travels is an exposure of human folly and vice which even the most hysterical apologists for mankind have swallowed without difficulty. Why then should they choke at Book IV, in which Swift continues the attack?“.

There are many ways to respond to Suits‘ contention, but we will respond by pointing to the issue of pride. In the first three books, Gulliver’s misplaced pride can almost be viewed as comical. It is funny, for example, when he somehow finds a way to maintain a noble disposition while he is licking the dust off the floor on his way to greet the Luggnaggian king. However, Gulliver’s blind pride magnifies to a dangerous pomposity in Houyhnhnmland that soon transforms into contempt for humankind. Harold Bloom suggests that when Gulliver tries to live a life of reason alone, the harmless self-satisfaction in a Houyhnhnm becomes in him a fanatical pride. Unlike the Houyhnhnms, the demands of a life of total reason in a man can only be sustained through pride, and Gulliver’s efforts to support this role lead to hatred and contempt. While Gulliver’s blindness to pride is part of the satire, we still have no reason to „swallow“ Book IV as Suits insists, because there are plenty of example throughout the book that some members of the human race are better examples for Gulliver than are the Houyhnhnms. People tend to „choke“ on the human folly presented in Book IV because Gulliver’s ability to cope with vice is complicated by the sense that moral norms have been replaced with values that are impossible to consider reasonable.

Next, Suits comments that „the ideal [of the horses] is unattainable but still to be admired. But if the ideal is out of reach, what is the point of offering it up to mankind?“. Then, Suits asks in the very next sentence, „…if [humans] cannot imitate the horses, what are [they] there for?“

The most immediate response to these silly speculations from Suits is that he contradicts himself. He concedes that the ideal of the horses is unattainable, yet then goes on to imply that their sole purpose is to provide a model for humans to imitate. But does Swift really intend for us to find the horses admirable? We contend that he does not.

The horses embody pure reason. At first, they may seem the perfect moral ideal until Swift exposes them as dull, unfeeling creatures. They derive no pleasure from sex, nor do they experience joy or sadness. They are not human. For those, like Suits, who think that the horses set a standard for humans to follow and admire, Bloom explains that Swift deliberately emphasizes the Houyhnhnms‘ least attractive trait-their coldness. If Swift had intended to gain our admiration for them, he would have done well not to repeatedly call our attention to their poor opinion of Gulliver. Bloom goes on to note that the purely reasonable nature of the Houyhnhnms has none of the qualities from which humanity can arise and flourish: love, pity, gratitude, charity, and kindness, for example. These are the traits that make life worth living for humans, and they are totally absent in the coldly rational Houyhnhnms. The nearest approach to human warmth is the devotion of the sorrel nag who was „not born with equal Talents of Mind“. The nag, with his incompletely rational mind is the only creature in Houyhnhnmland to show any affection.

To address Suits‘ second question: „What are the horses there for?“, Bloom offers a more levelheaded answer than the one provided by Suits. Bloom suggests that it is in the contrast between Houyhnhnm and Yahoo that Swift’s main thesis lies hidden. Gulliver’s moral position between the two is Swift’s allegorical picture of the dual nature of man.

Suits makes his most harebrained argument in regard to the master horse’s decision to banish Gulliver: „This may seem an iron kind of benevolence, but in the circumstances, it would have consisted with reason to have exterminated Gulliver, Yahoo-more or less-that he was“.

The image that springs to this reader’s mind after „choking down“ this unsavory passage is that of John McEnroe angrily heaving his tennis racket to the Wimbledon turf and exclaiming, „You cannot be serious!“. The problem that arises for a human in the discussion among the Houyhnhnm assembly comes from hearing people discussed in terms of „cattle control“. As Bloom interprets it, the Yahoo, like the Jew under Hitler, is a problem in pest control. Genocide appears to be a rational solution to the Houyhnhnms, as it was to the Third Reich. One can almost imagine that the Houyhnhnms might have temporarily lost their stoical composure with a grin of joy had they been privy to the Nazi extermination techniques to provide a Final Solution to the Yahoos.

Suits makes plenty more assertions that would be fun to refute, but since our point has been made, we will now, thankfully, turn our attention to some other important issues that lend support to our thesis; and leave Suits behind in his tangled web of delusion.

An interesting point to confront is the issue of clothing and nakedness in Gulliver’s Travels. Nigel Dennis shows that clothing plays a significant role throughout the book. In Lilliput, little tailors climb over Gulliver to measure him for a suit; in Brobdingnag, the silks hang like ponderous woolens upon the little mannikin. The intellectuals of Laputa express their metaphysics through the absurdity of their garments; and in Houyhnhnmland, rabbit skins make adequate suits and the skins of Yahoos are used for the soles of shoes. Unlike the naked Houyhnhnms, clothing is necessary to man. It not only provides warmth and comfort, but aids in civilized behavior.

Another interpretation connects the Houyhnhnms‘ plain, direct language with their nakedness. The connections between truth and nakedness, and clothing and deception are old ones that can be found in such authors as Chaucer, Shakespeare, and Behn. Bloom calls our attention to the significant fact that the Houyhnhnms are horses who do not wear clothing when he writes: „They are beings whose physical difference is thrust upon our notice to suggest that they are of a quite different order, and that their rational virtue is alien to mankind“. To put it simply, the Houyhnhnms speak the naked truth while the European Yahoos‘ language is clothed in deception.

While this trait may, at first glance, make the Houyhnhnms appear admirable, we should ask ourselves whether we are to admire the sorrel nag when he not only does not know how to react to Gulliver’s explanation of „the thing which was not“, but lacks even the minimal imagination that might allow him to apprehend the human need for fictions. If the sorrel nag’s inability to comprehend fictions was present in humans, it would be impossible for us to enjoy and appreciate Macbeth, or Moby Dick, or Gulliver’s Travels, for that matter. The virtues of the Houyhnhnms would result in a cultural stalemate if they were imported into the human condition.

On that note, it is now fitting to take a closer look into the human condition. An appropriate method to explore this will be to consider the roles of the Brobdingnagians and Pedro de Mendez, and how they serve to strengthen our thesis.

Although Swift makes it clear that the giants can be cruel, like Gulliver’s first owner; or jealous, like the dwarf; they can also be warm and caring. The loyal affection of Glumdalclitch is an example of well-regulated affections in human relationships. Bloom also points out that while the Brobdingnagians are not perfect; they are, precisely, the least corrupted of fallen humanity. This, however, does not suggest despair for humankind. Unlike the Houyhnhnms, the virtues of the giants are within our grasp, but it takes much work to reach the stature of a „moral“ giant.

The introduction of Pedro de Mendez represents an even stronger example of the virtue possible to man. Captain Mendez treats Gulliver kindly and shows himself to be a virtuous and charitable man. However, Gulliver is now blind to common sense as a result of aspiring to the Houyhnhnm ideal, and he treats Mendez as a mere Yahoo. This aspiration to become a horse exposes Gulliver’s fatal flaw-his pride. Pride is preventing him from recognizing human virtue even when it slaps him in the face. According to Bloom, the presentation of Mendez shows us that Gulliver’s mistakes could have been avoided, because as we stated earlier, he has met several examples of that kind of goodness to which it is possible for man to attain: the king of Brobdingnag, Glumdalclitch, Gulliver’s wife, and Mendez, to name a few. Mendez makes a strong impression because he represents the course that man should follow. In contrast, Gulliver has aimed too high, and can no longer perceive the achievable goodness of man.

This achievable goodness is, perhaps, taken to its pinnacle in Plato’s Republic. We have already alluded to the parallels between Houyhnhnmland and the Ideal City, but now we will study it a bit more closely.

The comparisons that can be made between the two places are staggering, therefore, we will just take a look at some of the more significant ones. Like Plato’s Ideal City, the Houyhnhnms are also governed entirely by reasonable justice, educating their offspring out of reason rather than love, and showing no preference for their own young over those of their neighbors. The mating arrangements and the control over the heredity of the offspring also promote the eugenics touted in the Republic. Bloom relates that the life of the Houyhnhnms has the simplicity of the Golden Age, with its poems of friendship, praise of athletic achievement, and it simple diet of milk and oats. Similarly, the children in the Ideal City are given intense education in the arts and physical training, fed simple and wholesome food, and taught to avoid any kind of excess. The philosopher-kings and auxiliaries in the Ideal City are like the Houyhnhnms-they are rational creatures.

So, what is the significance in making this comparison? The answer is that Plato’s Ideal City is proposed by Socrates as a way to cure men’s vices and allow justice to reign. It is obvious from the comparisons the Houyhnhnmland contains details borrowed from Plato. The significance of this „borrowing“ allows Swift to demonstrate that this type of society is only suitable for totally rational creatures. The only kind of being that could successfully flourish in such an atmosphere is the kind that does not require a cure from vice in the first place.

If we accept the latter statement to be true, then the „gullible“ Gulliver’s quest to become horse-like is doomed from the start. Our final point will be to take a look at Gulliver’s folly and ridiculousness in his misguided aspirations.

Gulliver has simplified his thinking to the point where he does not comprehend that a human being is much more complex than a Houyhnhnm or a Yahoo. Bloom lends strong support to this claim when he declares, „Gulliver has become, through choosing to judge mankind by an alien standard, a ludicrous yet terrible misanthrope“. Gulliver’s behavior is utterly ridiculous when he returns home: he detests the company of other humans, he walks like a horse and speaks in a neighing tone, and he spends most of his time in the stable. This is plain foolishness, and it is obvious to this reader that Swift does not intend for Gulliver to be taken seriously at this point. Gulliver is a blathering fool at the end of the book, and Swift uses this to end the story on a note of irony. Gulliver glorifies reason, but displays none of it; he condemns pride, but pride has driven him to madness. Bloom sums it up perfectly when he explains, „Swift sets the extremes firmly before us, and suggests that the proper course is to avoid extremes and the distortions to which they give rise“.

In conclusion, we have refuted the ‚Hard‘ interpretations of Gulliver’s Travels to show that the Houyhnhnms do not represent a standard of morality that would be ideal, desirable, or even possible for humans. The Houyhnhnms have been shown to be incapable of the virtues which unite reason with passion and are, therefore, as useless as a model for human morality as a gelding is for procreation. We have shown the human need for fictions and the implausibility of a life of pure reason. And we have compared the Houyhnhnms to the Brobdingnagians and Pedro de Mendez, and drawn parallels to Houyhnhnmland and Plato’s Ideal City; all to drive home the point: The Houyhnhnms do not represent an ideal to which humans should aspire.

Finally, we have examined the disastrous results met by Gulliver when he makes this futile attempt. We are to understand that we should not aim too high, as Gulliver does when, in trying to ignore part of his human nature, he becomes less than a human being. In the end, Gulliver has turned the virtue of reason into a vice and, in doing so, he has abandoned the common „horse sense“ that is necessary to humans.

Does Medicaid Cover Surrogacy?

My potential surrogate mothers and their intended parents are attracted by the idea that Medicaid, or other federal programs, can assist with the costs of the surrogate mother’s pregnancy and the birth of the surrogate baby. Maternity health insurance can be quite expensive and this is a way to trim thousands of dollars away from the cost of surrogacy which can be used for other expenses, including the surrogate’s compensation.

So that begs the question: if a surrogate mother financially qualifies for government assistance, should that be used to help cover the costs of a surrogacy? The answer is absolutely NO. Under no circumstances should federal assistance be used to fund a surrogacy.

It is not the government’s responsibility to assist intended parents with the costs of their infertility treatments. Though a typical set of intended parents have put in more than their fair share of taxes over the years, and might feel entitled to receiving some benefits from all of that, it is not the remaining taxpayer’s burden to bear.

Though the surrogate mother may qualify to receive assistance, the child she carries does not. The parents of that child do not meet the income qualifications needed to be eligible for the assistance. This is the equivalent of a woman claiming her neighbor’s child is hers in order to qualify.

It is fraud. And if the government decided to, they could prosecute the surrogate mother and intended parents for fraud. This could involve hefty fines, and, if they chose to make an example of the situation may even involve jail time.

Many agencies and clinics will not work with surrogate mothers who are on public assistance. Often, they simply do not want to get involved in a situation that could become misconstrued by the federal government.

Another reason agencies choose not to work with these women is the fact that they might need the money provided by surrogacy in order to meet their basic necessities. Since so much in surrogacy is uncertain, the surrogate might go months without receiving a cent of compensation. She may also go upwards of a year and end a journey having never received any compensation whatsoever.

Add to that the fact that many see surrogacy as exploitation of the poor and agencies simply do not wish to get involved. The last thing surrogacy needs is more controversy.

Other forms of public assistance, such as WIC should also be viewed the same way. If she were not pregnant with another couple’s child, the surrogate would not qualify to be placed on WIC; therefore, she does not quality for it.

If a potential surrogate mother is in dire financial straits, surrogacy is simply not the best option for her. If a woman is currently a surrogate and finds herself in a difficult financial situation which will cause her to not be able to afford proper nutrition, the intended parents should cover these costs.

But under no circumstances should either the surrogate mother or intended parents be tempted to use the government for help. Medicaid is not a cheap way to get a surrogacy done. It’s a way to get in a lot of trouble in years to come.

Difference in Working Styles Between India, US and Europe

The working styles between India, US and Europe differ widely. Many Indian corporates and multinational companies are wooing Indians settled abroad in the US and Europe to return to India and work for them. With a multitude of highly paid jobs up for grabs for the experienced professionals, many Indian expatriates are thinking of returning home to take up these jobs.

These Indians in USA and Europe would be exposed to the American and European style of work culture, which is very different from the working style in India. With many multinationals setting up branches in India, they are trying their best to incorporate the western working style in their Indian offices too. Earlier in Indian companies and corporate set ups, constructive criticism, training programs for employees, motivational meetings, teleconferences; employee bonding etc were unheard of and were considered alien and set aside for the American working style.

With the advent of multinationals, the tremendous growth of the IT sector and its allied BPO and Outsourcing services sectors, the American working style is fast being implemented in many of the offices here. But alas these are confined only to the large corporates and multinationals. Smaller and mediocre firms are still following the Indian working style.

Time management does not rank high on the priority list of Indian working styles unlike their American and European counterparts who are sticklers for punctuality and time management. Americans value their time and are keen that the employees are punctual at work and this permeates into their working environment too. In India, if an employee is late he or she always has a good convincing reason. It is common place event to find business meeting rescheduled or rather delayed by an hour or two in Indian companies.

The working style in India requires employees to be dressed in semi formals unlike their western counterparts who are all dressed in formals like blazers and suits. Here the weather does not permit such dressing. In the Indian work environment, everyone addresses each other as Sir or Madam, but addressing bosses by their first name is fast catching up in India, which is so commonly found in USA and Europe where everyone addresses one another by their first names. Indians are inquisitive about others and so take a lot of interest in gossiping about others, some will even try to pry into others lives and offer unsolicited advice. Certainly, this is not found in the American work environment where everyone at the office will keep to their selves and do the work they are allotted diligently.

Those who have worked in companies and firms in the US and Europe will find coming back to work in Indian companies and Indian working conditions really different from what they were previously used to. It will present a challenging task to those Indians in USA [http://www.imrti.com/] who are seeking job opportunities in Indian companies whether they are corporate business houses or multinationals.

Busking Etiquette and Tips!

Here are some suggestions that I’ve accumulated in my busking experiences. Additions and contradictions welcome. For what it’s worth, my act is to stand there playing fiddle tunes – I don’t bottle (directly solicit tips) or do banter, and somebody with a more „show business“ kind of act might need to do some things differently.

CHOOSING A PLACE

1. Pick a spot where you’re visible from as many directions as possible. People need time to recognize what you’re doing, decide to give you a tip, and find it in their pockets. If they can see you for a minute before they’re actually in front of you, they’re a lot more likely to give you a tip then if they suddenly come upon you hidden in a doorway and only have seconds to react.

2. Be very considerate about where you set up, so that you avoid confrontation and avoid annoying the passersby. Be sure that you are not blocking smooth traffic flow into any store, and be sure that you’re not making it difficult for wheelchairs or baby strollers to pass or get onto the curb. Also, avoid captive audiences (i.e., playing right beside a restaurant with outdoor seating).

3. One exception to what I just said about captive audiences is traffic lights – choosing intersections that have traffic lights is good, because being a briefly captive audience gives them the time they need to decide to give you a tip.

4. Stores that are out of business or closed for the weekend are often a good place to play in front of. There’s nobody there to object to you, and often there’s a doorway where you can put your backpack out of the way behind you, or a canopy to keep off the sun and rain. Don’t stand yourself too far back in their doorway though; or you won’t be visible enough.

5. When choosing a part of town to busk in, don’t necessarily rule out areas with lower traffic, because often you can still make good money there, because finding you there is a pleasant surprise, and you’re not competing with the panhandlers and other buskers the next block over or who were there yesterday. In a spot in my hometown where I consistently make excellent money, it’s not unusual for me to play a set of tunes without anyone even walking by. But when they do come along, they give me something. But on the busiest city streets, or in a market where busking is more common, a much lower percentage of passersby give me something.

6. Many cities will have a downtown core and several smaller, alternative downtowns – perhaps a district that is known as being artsy, trendy, collegy. I’ve found that the minor downtowns are generally better than the main downtowns – people are happier, it’s easier to get a corner.

7. Keep a respectful distance from other buskers, especially other musicians, but don’t necessarily let a little piped in music push you around. A number of times I’ve tried out spots that seemed perfect except for an audible radio from a nearby business, but I found that I was still able to dominate the sound waves in the immediate area, and still did fine in tips. Obviously, if the piped in music is really blaring or you’re really quiet this won’t work.

8. I’d pick a less than perfect spot in the shade over a perfect spot in the sun. The real secret to making money busking is patience and stamina – and you’ll have more patience and stamina if you’re comfortable.

9. Keeping in mind that you should not get your legal advice from Mudcat: don’t ask for permission to busk, don’t ask if it’s legal, just go ahead and do it. If someone confonts you, your line is a polite „I’m sorry, I didn’t know, I’ll be going now.“ The guerrilla approach (not to be confused with the gorilla approach; leave that to the rentacops) is simple and effective and I’ve never gotten into any real trouble with it, even in places where I’ve known it was illegal. (I’ve been kicked out of lots of places, but that’s not real trouble – real trouble is being fined, arrested, or beaten up.)

The cliche that it’s easier to get forgiveness than permission is true. Also, the only laws that matter are the ones that anybody cares to enforce. If you are considerate in where you play, so you’re not likely to tick anyone off, and you look good and sound good, chances are nobody will care enough to enforce the law.

If you are busking somewhere where you suspect or know it’s illegal, remember the principle that „running makes you look guilty“. So if a cop is around, just keep playing as if there’s no problem – don’t close your case or try packing up quickly. If you do, saying „I didn’t know it wasn’t allowed“ will be much less believable.

WHILE BUSKING

10. Keeping in mind that you should not get your medical advice from Mudcat: a mild state of dehydration is your friend. Publically available washrooms aren’t always easy to find, and it sucks to have to interrupt a good busking session, possibly losing your good spot to another busker, because you have to go pee. You’ll need to have a water bottle along, but don’t overdo it.

11. Coins dropped into your case from a height will sometimes bounce right out again. So take a quick look around the ground for stray coins when you’re leaving, and don’t put your case down beside a sewer grate (yes, learned the hard way). And while you’re at it, don’t put your case down anywhere you see a lot of pigeon droppings (no, not learned the hard way).

>12. People will ask about lessons, so if you don’t teach, consider carrying the phone number of your friend who does.

13. Be an opportunistic bastard. If Johnny Cash dies, get out there and play his hits. If the Blue Jays are in the Stanley Cup finals, wear something that implies you care.

14. Exploit children. If someone with a baby or toddler is stopped near you, play „Twinkle Twinkle Little Star“. If it’s a young child, ask if they have a favourite song – they’ll probably say „Twinkle Twinkle Little Star.“ If it’s a medium child accompanied by an adult and looking interested, consider offering to let them try your instrument (personally I always keep one hand on the fiddle while letting a kid try, and I take a peek at the cleanliness of their hands first).

Being kid-friendly has three advantages. One, it makes you more interesting to the kids and their parents, and kids and parents are often your best customers. Two, it will attract the attention of unrelated passersby who want to watch the cute kid dance or try to play fiddle. Three, it makes you feel like a bit of a folk missionary, giving the kids a chance to hear and try live acoustic music.

15. It’s very common for someone to pass you once then give you a tip on a the way back, once they’ve had more time to think about or have gotten change at the store. What this means for you is that every time you start busking, you start with a slow stretch when everybody is a first-time passer. And every time you stop busking, you lose tips from the people who would have given you something on the way back. So, try to start and stop less often: i.e., if you’re going to play for three hours in a day, you’ll probably do better in two 90 minute shifts and three 60 minute shifts. Also, don’t be in a rush to leave the spot when you’re tired of playing. Have your break nearby. It’s happened to me many times that people have approached me with a tip in the fifteen minutes after I stopped playing, saying, „I heard you earlier.“ On the other hand, sometimes people will say, „I’ll get you on the way back“, and sometimes they do, but don’t make any decisions based on these promises.

16. If there are people stopped when you finish a tune, ask if they have a request. Even if you only know the chorus, or ear the song out with some trial and error, people appreciate your making an attempt at their requests.

17. Salt your case (put some of your own money in) with the kind of currency you want to attract. Peer pressure is a powerful force; people will look to other’s example to see if they should give you a tip, and if so, how much. I’ve also noticed that tips often come in clumps – I go for ten minutes without a tip, then four people give me something within in the space 30 seconds. I suspect this is peer pressure; seeing the first person lets the others know that it’s the thing to do.

18. If there’s an alternative to money that you’d be happy to receive, consider salting your case with it too (subway tokens, Canadian Tire money, even food if you’re in a market). Some people enjoy giving a concrete gift instead of money, and some people may suspect that you’ll just buy drugs if they give you money. Often people will offer a cigarette, but if you smoke, I don’t recommend putting cigarettes in the case to give people the idea, as it will likely drive away other customers.

OTHER

19. Sometimes, people steal from buskers. There’s not really much you can do about it except minimize your losses by limiting how much money you let collect in your case. Do not chase a thief – to do so is to turn a non-violent encounter into a potentially violent one, and what are you going to do anyway, with a fragile and valuable instrument in your hands? Also, consider that criminals sometimes work in teams – someone who grabs some money may just be trying to distract you so his buddy can steal your whole case, or your backpack or spare instrument.

20. This is more of a long term strategy – but remember that busking depends on a publicly-owned, pedestrian-oriented scene. So do your shopping at businesses with downtown storefronts instead of malls or box stores where there’s no public space or no pedestrians, and help keep downtowns alive! Also, I think it’s good manners and good public relations to give your business to stores that you busk in front of, if practical.

21. Maybe this should have been tip number one: keep the faith. I know that many people have a lot of stage fright related busking (more so than playing gigs, it seems sometimes), and you will have good days and bad days and occasionally some encounters that aren’t so nice. Keep at it!

11 Tips For Avoiding Foreclosure In South Florida

Purchasing a home can be a frightful experience. Imagine owning a home for 3 years, all the payments have been made on time and in full. When the fourth year rolls around, your job downsizes leaving you without work and a paycheck. If this is your fear you may be one of the millions of at-risk Americans with a subprime adjustable-rate mortgage (ARM). Which means your interest rates will rise to a much higher percentage later this year. On the other hand, you may be a prime borrower who chose a nontraditional mortgage. You may be up to date at this time on your mortgage but have a fear of company layoffs and expenses rising.

The odds of avoiding foreclosure in Florida are improving. There are now many „We Buy Houses Florida“ companies who specialize in saving homeowners from foreclosure. As well there are new programs for refinancing, governmental solutions, and lenders who are willing to freeze interest rates depending on the mortgage.

1.) How Do I Avoid Foreclosure In Florida? Do Your Homework.

The reason many homeowners end up in unaffordable loans is that they either did understand the terms of the loan or were swindled by loan sharks. „A good portion of the people we see are folks who received loans they should never have gotten in the first place,“ says Phyllis Salowe-Kaye of Citizen Action a large mortgage crisis counseling agency. Are you someone who was uninformed when entering into your mortgage? Now is the time to make sure you do not make that mistake again. For avoiding foreclosure in Florida counseling here is a list provided by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. Many other websites provide free advice for distressed homeowners on their attorney general, banking department or housing finance agency websites.

2.) Contact Your Lender Immediately

If your credit has already gone down the drain, you will lose leveraging power. Also, for those who do not yet have a credit problem, there are new programs for avoiding foreclosure in Florida. Project Lifeline has six major lenders (Bank Of America, Citigroup, Countrywide Financial, JP Morgan Chase, Washington Mutual, and Wells Fargo) who have agreed to suspend the foreclosure process for 30 days for qualified borrowers seeking to keep their homes in the Sunshine State.

3.) Open All Mail From Lenders

Subprime Lenders offer a reset of ARM mortgages through the mail months before the interest rate is scheduled to reset.

4.) Be Patient

„Too many people are trying to resolve the problem with quick takeaway advice,“ says Salowe-Kaye. “ The fastest way to relief from a mortgage is through a „We Buy Houses Florida“ for more information click the link. For those who are willing to wait an eternity for a resolution, William Sanchez of Tampa Bay Community Development Corporation in Clearwater, Florida has advice for you. He reports, „You cannot get this resolved with one phone call.“ Helplines are jammed, it can take an eternity to reach the person servicing your loan, and it’s impossible to know how many homeowners will actually hang on to their homes. Still, „lenders are definitely more willing to work out plans.“ Be prepared to be dogged by experts and options from your lender.

5.) Contact A Free Or Low-Cost Housing-Counselor

For HUD-certified counselors that assist homeowners with avoiding foreclosure in Florida visit the U.S. Department Of Housing and Urban Development.

6.) Get A Qualified Expert To Help You Navigate The Foreclosure Process

Do not stop at a housing-counselor the very next number you should be calling is a foreclosure attorney. Ignore lawyers advertising „quick fixes“ on tv, the internet, or telephone calls. The only quick fix is selling your home fast to a „We Buy Houses Florida“ company. They are the only company you can trust who will give you a free consultation and help you navigate the foreclosure process. To find a lawyer you can trust, contact Legal Services Corp.

If your income level is low enough they will connect you with an affiliated agency. Call the Florida State Bar Association and search for a county bar association for further assistance.

7.) You May Be Eligible For Special Assistance.

The federal FHASecure program may be able to provide a refinance option with a fixed rate for homeowners who have an adjustable-rate mortgage and a good credit rating. Current and former members of the military who have served within the past 90 days may be eligible for the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act offering foreclosure protection.

8.) Bankruptcy Is Not The Easy Way Out

Under the current laws of the State Of Florida, bankruptcy can halt or slow foreclosure. Seek legal advice from a trusted source before proceeding. Bankruptcy judges are not permitted to restructure debt owed on a mortgage covering a primary residence. „Borrowers can file Chapter 13 bankruptcy, which will put a temporary hold on a foreclosure action. The problem is that in order to sustain the Chapter 13 plan, a borrower in a high-cost mortgage has to be able to make payments in the mortgage going forward, and also to pay off a percentage of the arrears and other debts each month,“ says Josh Zinner of the Neighborhood Economic Development Advocacy Project in New York. More so consider that relief programs such as Project Lifeline, are not available to borrowers who have entered bankruptcy.

9.) Keeping The Payments Current Is The Most Important Factor of Avoiding Foreclosure In Florida

Mindy Wright, a housing counselor in Elyria, Ohio, says people often make the mistake of paying off credit cards bills before making their monthly mortgage payment. People do this because credit card companies call them immediately and often use threatening tactics to get the borrower to pay. Banks, however, take a long time to communicate and solely communicate through the mail. Once the borrower receives the notice of default in the mail it is already too late. The borrower now owes interest and late fees on top of the payments past due. Typically lenders will not contact their borrowers until 60 to 90 days have passed. Credit card companies will harass you day and night until the late payment is up to date. Wright advises homeowners to put off the credit card companies and pay their mortgage payment first. „If you don’t pay the credit card bill, it might ruin your credit score, but a foreclosure will impact your credit score far more negatively-plus you won’t have a place to live,“ she says.

10.) Fasten Your Seatbelt.

Rid yourself of luxuries such as cable and Netflix. Doing so will give you bargaining power when sitting down for a negotiation. Being willing to bring any money to the table and willing to cash in assets such as jewelry or a car will play in your favor. „Servicers want to see you make sacrifices. Show some effort,“ says Michael van Zalinger, director of home ownership services for Neighborhood Housing Services of Chicago. When talking to the bank be sure to assemble pay stubs, benefit statements, and tax returns.

11.) Familiarize Your Self With Mortgage Workouts Aimed For Avoiding Foreclosure In Florida

The best solution would be to refinance into a long-term mortgage spreading out the late payments over time and raising the interest rate slightly. This option requires good credit and is rarely applicable for the average homeowner in Florida. You also may not be able to afford the fees involved. Alternatives would be a repayment plan or a loan modification.

The first resort that actually pays you would be to sell your house to a „We Buy Houses Florida“ company.

The Benefits of Freshwater Aquarium Crabs

Aquariums have the option of housing so much more than fish. Freshwater aquarium crabs can be a fun and beneficial addition to any fish tank!

The crabs you get from pet stores are tiny, averaging between one and four inches. Each crab should get one square foot of aquarium floor. If you put too many in your aquarium, they will get territorial and fight. You will find two kinds of freshwater crabs sold in pet stores: true and untrue. True crabs are characterized by a flat shell and five pairs of legs, the first two being pinchers. Their abdomens are folded under their cephalothroax (their major body part). Examples of true crabs are Fiddler (the most popular among aquarists) and Horseshoe. Untrue crabs keep their bodies in a seashell. They are categorized with true crabs in pet stores because they are short crustaceans with hard exoskeletons and ten legs.

Crabs are great for aquariums. They are scavengers and will eat organic matter such as decaying plants, dead fish, or decaying food. Because they walk and climb but do not swim, they also stir up substrate. Like land dwelling plants, underwater plants also need their soil or gavel cultivated. Having crabs in your tank will cultivate your aquarium’s greenery and help it grow. The most significant benefit crabs have to offer is probably their appetite for algae. If you have an algae problem, get a crab or two to keep it in check. These critters, as well as snails, make meals out of the stuff. Keep in mind nothing is a substitution for maintaining the aquarium yourself.

Another benefit of freshwater crabs is the fun behavior they display! These guys will climb, scuttle and hide. If you stick any kind of decoration in your tank, they will not hesitate to explore every inch of it. They will even climb up the side of tanks and try to escape if they find a hole in the hood! Intriguing behavior is perhaps why Fiddle crabs are one of the most popular. They are nocturnal and scuttle around quite a bit. The males are interesting in appearance because they have one small claw and the other one is supersized! Adding crabs to your aquarium will make it much more unique.

Bear in mind that crabs are slightly higher maintenance than some fish. Their water has to be kept at 70-82 degrees Fahrenheit. Crabs assist in keeping water clean, probably because they cannot live in it themselves if it gets too dirty. Make sure your crabs are living in clean water and test it often. Not all crabs can live in water forever. Most need to visit dry land. You can give them the land by putting a mound of gravel in your tank. Have it sit above the water and slope underwater.

Crabs crave a varied diet. Switch up their feed between flakes, frozen, and live food. They will still eat snacks of dead fish and feces in between meals! Lastly, think of the fish already in your tank. Some fish like to eat crabs, and crabs will eat tiny, bottom-dwelling fish. It does not do an aquarium any good if its inhabitants eat each other! Do some careful research before accidentally turning your aquarium into an underwater version of ‚Lord of the Flies‘.
